Choosing replacement tires for your ATV will have the biggest impact on your riding experience. If you are new to the world of ATV riding, the decision can seem overwhelming. Here’s a quick overview of your options to help simplify the process.
When is it Time to Replace Your Tires
As you become a more experienced rider, you become tuned into your vehicle’s performance. When you start noticing your ATV tires are not as responsive as they once were, it may be time to replace them. For example, you may not be taking corners as tightly as before, or there is more sliding or spinning of your wheels.
You should also inspect your tires regularly. If there is any discoloration, cracks, or the tire rubber is dry, it is probably time to replace them. A good rule of thumb is to expect your tires to last about four to five years.
What Type of Riding Do You Do?
The most important question to ask when choosing replacement ATV tires is where do you usually ride? If you use your ATV as a working vehicle on your property, your needs will be very different than someone who enjoys racing.
Tires are specially designed to work on different types of surfaces. For example, mud tires have large, high knobs that disperse the mud and dirt and allow for good traction on soft terrain. They will not work well in sand, however. For sand, ATV tires have a paddle feature that scoops the sand and are much lighter in weight.
There are basically five types of ATV Tires:
- Motocross Racing
- Rocky or Hard Terrain
Once you have decided what type of tire you need based on your riding practice, your decision becomes much easier.
When replacing your ATV tires, it is tempting to do a partial replacement to save money. But it is important that all four tires match in terms of size and lug pattern. They should also be inflated to the same pressure and have similar wear. Otherwise, you risk an uneven ride and can damage your ATV.
Replacing all four tires at the same time can give you more flexibility in making changes and gives you the evenest ride.
